Our furthest away fixture and it was as though the girls were still suffering from a bit of travel lag, as they never seemed to really get going this week. The pitch seemed to be bigger than we are normally used to and the girls struggled to adapt to their surroundings.
Camberley started well and played some good football, and they seemed to keep two at the back and always have four in attack. Croydon managed to get some possession and Amy and Sophie linked up well but Sophie’s shot went wide. Then Camberley attacked and Stirling saved well from a shot from distance but the ball wasn’t cleared and Camberley struck it home. GOAL 1-0 to Camberley.
Mae then came on as a replacement for Eleanor who went off feeling unwell. But Croydon still found it difficult to get any decent ball, and it was Camberley who were the more positive in attack. From a quick throw in Stirling had to save well and luckily Camberley blasted over the bar.
The game continued with Stirling the much busier keeper, and she made a couple of great stops. But could do nothing for Camberley’s second which went right into the bottom left corner. GOAL 2-0 to Camberley.
Croydon responded well and Sophie did a good back heel, turned and took on their defence only to see her shot turned onto the post by their goalie. It was then Camberley’s turn to attack and strike the post.
Then just before half time Stirling saved well again and Camberley had a great shot come straight back off the bar.
Half time came and the girls had a breather and a quick chat then it was out for the second half, luckily now playing down the slope. Isabella came on for Mae up front and Amy dropped back into midfield to support Kate.
Croydon started to assert some pressure with Kate making some good runs from midfield and Sophie just failing to get on the end of a couple of good crosses.
Camberley had a good attack in numbers which Stirling saved, Amy cleared off the line but we still couldn’t clear it and they scored. GOAL 3-0 to Camberley.
Molly then came off injured, after getting the ball in her face, and Eleanor came back on to replace her.
Croydon still managed to attack the Camberley goal, and Kate had a good run from midfield, cut in on goal but the shot was straight at the goalie.
At the other end Camberley hit the crossbar from a narrow angle and the ball went off for a throw in. Then from the next attack they flooded from midfield, Stirling managed to save but the ball rebounded to an attacker and was put in. GOAL 4-0 to Camberley.
Mae returned to the action replacing Amy, so that we had some fresh legs in the middle, but Croydon just couldn’t make that opening. The final whistle eventually came.
The girls were despondent knowing it wasn’t their best performance. But Camberley played very well and credit must go to them. The girls must put it down to experience and make amends next week, please!!
PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Georgia - played a Captains game in defence.
Also note must go to Stirling who did play very well and helped keep the score respectable.
